Digital GKV Billing – What you must know now as a care provider

If you operate a care service, a massive change is coming your way:
With the introduction of GKV-Datenaustauschs must from now on all care providers submit their billing digitally and encrypted via the central receiving point of the statutory health insurers to be submitted.

This may require adjustments to your processes, your software, and your data security measures. And honestly: this change is one of the biggest in the care sector in recent decades.

As a software developer with years of experience in care, I have already helped numerous service providers digitize their processes. In this post I'll show you exactly what you need to do now, to be prepared for the transition.

Paper invoices are increasingly being rejected

Some health insurers are now completely refusing to accept paper invoices or are relying on expensive external billing service providers.
Either way: Anyone who still sends paper invoices today is leaving real money on the table.

Successfully switching to digital billing requires preparation and time. The most important preparatory steps are – if not already done –:

  • the IK identifier to apply for

  • and thereby at the Trustcenter a certificate to encrypt billing documents to apply for

Adjust processes, software, and training

After these initial steps, you must:

  • the invoicing processes must be adjusted

  • the testing phase must be coordinated with the health insurers

  • the billing software must be adapted

  • staff training must be prepared

Typical problems during the transition are above all the time management. The testing phase often takes longer than expected, as does adapting internal processes. Implementing such a complex change in addition to day-to-day business requires careful planning and additional capacity.

What you should definitely do today are the first preparatory steps for the IK identifier and the certificate, so that you can stop sending paper invoices as soon as possible.

Two ways – which one is yours?

So you see: The switch to electronic billing is complex and time-consuming. You have two options:

  1. You carry out all the steps yourself – with all the risks and an enormous time investment.

  2. Or you rely on our All-in-One solution HomaFix, which not only handles your statutory health insurance billing but also simplifies your day-to-day operations.
