Many digital projects start with a good tool – and still have no impact. Why? Because digitalization is more than technology. It requires mindset, structure, and guidance.
In our work with ABMED, we've seen how digitalization has an impact when the right principles are front and center. In this article, we share three key lessons — for everyone who wants to truly bring digital solutions to life.
1. Digitalization begins with clarity
The most common question in digital projects is:
"Which tool do we need?"
The better question would be:
"Which problem do we want to solve?"
Anyone who wants to make digitalization effective must first understand the complexity within their own system. At ABMED, this included, for example, 170 colors in shift schedules and manual billing — many processes were not only slow, but also opaque. Only with a clear vision did a technical solution become possible.
Note: Technology only works where there is clarity.
2. No change without people
A tool can do a lot. But it changes nothing — as long as people don't use it.
What helped at ABMED: open communication, active listening, genuine involvement of the team. Digitalization was not imposed, but co-created.
The result? Not a 'tool revolution', but a cultural shift: away from 'that's how it's always been' toward 'this is better'.
Note: If you want digital solutions, you have to bring people along — not overwhelm them.
3. Implementation is just as important as innovation
There are many innovations. What is missing is the ability to implement them.
We often see: software is bought, time is invested — and yet nothing changes.
The difference is in the how:
Guidance rather than just rollout
Processes rather than just features
Reality rather than wishful thinking
In our work, we start exactly there: focusing on what's feasible, on clarity, and on impact.
Note: Digitalization doesn't work through novelty — it works through good implementation.
Conclusion: Digitalization is not a project. It is a process.
What we learned at ABMED applies to many organizations:
It's not about tools — it's about impact.
And that emerges when technology, mindset, and implementation come together.
What does digitalization mean to us?
For us, digitalization is not just installed, it's lived.
